Good stories, tasty food, and lots of uses for money!

This week ISN Elementary Class students have certainly been busy asking lots of questions; and interestingly it has only taken a couple of clues to inspire them to enjoy the challenge of working out many of the answers. Here are just a few of the great questions we have had fun answering this week.
What makes a good story?
Over the past few months Elementary Class students have been investigating what really makes a good story. After analyzing many excellent stories, students were able to identify a pattern that all these entertaining books had in common: title, introduction, problem, conclusion, and epilogue. Following this pattern, students are now working towards writing their own stories, and thrilling their audiences with some surprising conclusions.
How do people use their money to help animals and plants?
Using group discussion and our Money vocabulary chart, students have identified some very thoughtful answers to 3 questions about how people use their money. The “Hot Potato” activity allowed students to discuss and write their own ideas as well as read and add to the ideas of others.
On Ryu’s first day back at ISN, how can we welcome him back?
After a stay overseas one of our students, Ryu, has just returned. Everyone in Elementary Class has been looking forward to having him back in the class again. While he was away, he sent us an amazing book with pictures and lots of recounts about his life in a different country. We all enjoyed reading it very much. Students chose to make a “Welcome back” banner which we put up in our classroom as a surprise. Ryu also had a nice surprise for us and it was great to find out more about his adventure.
How can I make my ice-cream picture look real?.…… I mean really yummy?
Students enjoyed thinking about another use of money: buying ice-creams! Even though in real life they don’t last long, students found out that it can be a lot of fun making a longer lasting version on paper using part of a real picture and a kaleidoscope of tantalizing colors.
