1st Grade: Summer Program Week 3

We had an interesting and fun week 3 in summer program! Our topic was 3D art. Each day we focused on a different medium: origami, architecture, sculpture and mixed media. We studied professionals in each field by watching videos and looking at pictures.
For origami, we learned about its history and studied a South African artist, Quentin Trollip. He designs his own origami pieces. They’re big and intricate. They gave us inspiration for our own original work!
For architecture, we studied 12 famous buildings such as the Taj Mahal, Sydney Opera House and the Burj Khalifa. Then we became architects ourselves and made our own architecture using chopsticks.
For sculpture, we used both clay and wire. We studied classical Greek sculptures and learned about the gods and goddesses in Ancient Greek mythology. Then we tried to emulate them by making our own sculptures out of clay. We also made wire sculptures. Ms. Ellen was really impressed with our creativity!
For mixed media, we will make 3D craft out of recycled materials. We looked at famous works from artists Robert Rauschenberg, Anselm Kiefer and Vik Muniz. Then, we watched a video on Gerda Steiner and Jörg Lenzlinger, who only use recycled materials for their installations. Mixed media is really interesting! We’re looking forward to making our own mixed media work tomorrow.
We will have an exhibition on Friday, displaying our artwork in the meeting room and sharing the results with our elementary friends! Family members, if you have a chance, please take a look at what we created this week. We will keep it up until Monday!
