Pizza Party! MW 7/29-8/2

“Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” –Benjamin Franklin

The Milky Way students had so much fun learning from their firsthand experience of growing and using plants. After harvesting the tomatoes and basil in the garden, they helped us wash them. The most exciting part was when they used the tomatoes and basil as toppings for the pizza. They worked together to spread the pizza sauce on the ready made pizza dough and started putting the cheese, sliced tomatoes, sliced onions, and basil on it. We asked the kitchen staff to bake the pizza they made. Thank you! In the afternoon, the pizza was ready for our snack. Everybody enjoyed eating the pizza they made. “The pizza is yummy!” “I want to eat more pizza!” “This is healthy because we used tomatoes and vegetables!”

On August 29th, we will go to Gojo ISN elementary school for the Science Fair wherein students will present what they have learned about PLANTS. We would like to invite our parents to witness our presentation, so we will make an invitation card for them. Thinking about it, we discovered another way to use plants, particularly vegetables such as okra and bok choy or Chinese cabbage. We decorated the plain white paper with vegetable stamps using okra and the bottom part of bok choy and it  created beautiful flower shapes.

On Friday, we went back to the rice field where we planted rice seedlings to see how they are growing. We remember the first time we went there when we soaked our feet in the mud and planted lots of rice seedlings. Now, they are big and we tried to measure their height using our hands or handspan and they are 7-8 handspan long. In the classroom, we discussed how they grew like that. “Because they get lots of sunlight.” “Because they have lots of water.” Do you think it will grow in our garden? “No, because it’s not muddy!” “Then, we can plant in the mud play area. Let’s put lots of water and make it muddy.” That’s a great idea, isn’t it?

In our phonics lesson, students learn a new digraph which is /nk/ as in wink, pink, oink, ink, plank, trunk, drink, think, honk, bank, and tank. We played the “Make the Word” game as a team which we also relate to our UOI3: Teamwork. Each student represents a letter and once the teacher shows the picture, they have to start making the word. “We need the letter “n” here. You can stand here. You are the letter “p”. They tried to start communicating with their friends and be caring during the game. We also remember our central idea “Working together with our hearts and minds, we can achieve a common goal.”
