Ladybugs and Aphids-Shooting Star-August 26th-30th

Hello Everyone,

Welcome to our last blog for the month of August!

Shooting Star class kicked off our week with a birthday party for all ISN members who were born in August. All the classes gathered together, sang the birthday song to the celebrators as they lined up in front of the audience and asked them their name, age, and the present they received followed by giving out of birthday card by the respective teachers. Once all the birthday celebrators returned to their seat, we all stood up and grooved together to the beat of the freeze dance. Everyone was very proud to show off their own dance moves as the music played and once it stopped, we froze with a funny action. The party room was filled with fun and laughter. Thank you, Ms. Grenda for hosting the birthday party.

For phonics, we carried out a “Mystery Partner” game to review the CVC words with short a and e sounds. Students were grouped into two. With a go signal, the first group picked out the CVC words and the second group, picture cards. Then, they walked around to find their match. When they found their match, they both sat down together and read the CVC word aloud. Mystery solved!

For our UOI, we started exploring our second line of inquiry which talks about the relationship between insects and our lives. As part of our prior knowledge, students were asked questions like, Do you like insects? Why? Do you think insects are good for us? Why or why not? Do you think we can eat insects? If yes, what kind of insects can we eat? At the beginning, the teachers thought that it was challenging for students to answer those questions, but the outcome was spectacular because the students engaged in collaborative discussions to explore key concepts. After the prior knowledge, we looked into the relationship of ladybugs and aphids in our lives. We watched a video of a ladybug eating aphids and investigated into a picture of aphids eating cabbage. We even observed some basil leaves from our garden and wondering why they have holes. There was a lot of discussion taking place from the beginning until the end of our UOI. Finally, our little inquirers have come up to the end of our discussion an idea that ladybugs are useful insects because they eat aphids while aphids are harmful insects because they eat the plants. After UOI, we played in the schoolyard and guess what? Some students walked to the garden by themselves before playing to check if aphids are eating the leaves. They found holes in the leaves and said, Aphids eat the leaves. They also said, Thank you, ladybugs for helping us!

Not Goodだと思う?」

This week we officially ended our schoolyard pool. It was sad to say that we were not able to play in the water this week due to rainy weather. Looking forward to playing again next year. Instead of playing in the pool, we spent time playing at the play castle especially in the sandpit.

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone.
