Grades 4, 5 and 6: Leading the change

Hello, everyone! A fun week is behind Grade 4, 5 and 6 students. Their fifth Unit of Inquiry of the year is coming to an end and the students have started work on their summative assessment task. Each student will try to lead a positive environmental change in their community and orally present their planning process and results. The students will draw inspiration from many other assignments they have completed during this Unit, including last week’s creation of their own Matsumoto city public transport system. 🚇

This week, they also started the third line of inquiry of this Unit, in which they will explore different positive examples of people who themselves have lead the change toward sustainability in their communities. The students read about the life of Greta Thunberg, a 17-year-old activist from Sweden and discussed the way she passionately approaches her speeches. ♻️

In Science lesson, the students learned about a type of mixtures called colloids and made a colorful example of their own, in Math, they revised their mental multiplication skills, in Health they discussed the importance of inner beauty in relation to outer beauty, while in Economics and Society, they touched upon the topic of legal aid. 💡

In order to reinforce the idea that a change towards sustainability is something each of us can start, the students embarked on a bus trip without using a bus, just their bicycles and the power of their legs. The students have excitedly prepared for the trip in the school surrounding for the past week. Finally, on Friday, they cycled and hiked up a mountain to Maruyama agri park and park, having fun, practicing their cycling skills and reflecting on the small things each of us can do for the environment, such as using less fuel, disposing of trash properly, recycling… 🌲

Have a great weekend! ⛅
