War & Peace

Good day everyone and I hope this finds all well and glad.

This past week, the Grade 3 classroom has found us stepping out on to a new area of exploration; peace and conflict.

We have have begun this endeavour by considering the term “conflict” and what it means as well as whether this can be both negative and positive.

We started by looking at a list of words that included, war, anger, fighting, violence and unfair. As well as these words there was, useful, help, hopeful, people and problem-solving. The class clapped if they thought the word had a lot to do with conflict, snapped fingers if they thought it had a little to do with the term and do nothing if they thought it was completely unrelated.

We reflected upon our results and some questions were posed. Firstly, is a fight different from a disagreement? Also, why do conflicts become violent? And, can a conflict be a good thing?

We then considered the positive and negative implications of conflict and it was heartening to watch as the students began to realise that conflict is an integral part of life.

In the latter half of the week, we then began to consider scales of conflict i.e. personal, local, national and international, and how these conflicts can all be addressed and action taken. However, the more we know about the conflict the better prepared we can be to deal with it.

Until next week, peace!
