The weather is still cold and many students at the school are suffering from the recent flu epidemic. The Upper Elementary Class seems to have been spared, for everyone was in perfect health. Or maybe they are just very good at taking care of their body and staying healthy? 😊
This week marks the final week of the current Unit of Inquiry, dealing with health. The students have spent their time discussing all the things they have learned in the past six weeks and writing their individual reflections on the subject. They have also studied about our bodies’ nervous system and how, in case of, for example, hitting our arm, the nerve endings in the arms send information about they pain to our brain and that’s when we feel pain. 🏥
From next week, the students will start their research into the topic of rubbish and how people dispose of their waste. As it is their final Unit for this school year, they will also try to connect all the topics they previously learned about. A daunting, but exciting task!
On Tuesday, Ms. Brigitte returned from her trip to her home country, Australia. Everyone was excited to hear her stories and experiences and ask her many questions. On Friday, the entire Shimauchi campus carried out a “Stranger danger” emergency drill. The point was to educate students on the proper procedures if an incident happens involving a strange person coming into the school building. After the drill ended, the students received more safety information from Mr. Chris and Ms. Chisaki and have also shared some of their own useful ideas and questions. It is important to stay safe, isn’t it? 💪

まだまだ寒い日が続いています。今週は何人かインフルエンザでお休みしている子もいますが、アッパーエレメンタリークラスのみんなは元気です。みんな自分の体をよく管理して健康を維持するのが上手なのかもしれませんね？！
今週は、現在行っているユニット健康の締めくくりとなりました。生徒たちは、これまでの6週間で学んできたことを話し合い、テーマについて個々に振り返り評価を書きました。体の神経系についても勉強しました。例えば、腕をぶつけた場合、どのように腕の端の神経が脳へ痛みの情報を伝え、私たちは痛いと感じるかということを学びました。🏥
来週からは、ゴミとどのように人々はゴミを処分するかのテーマについて調べていきます。今年度の最後のユニットになります。これまで学んできた全てのトピックを結び付けていきたいと思います。大変かもしれませんが、とても遣り甲斐があると思います！
火曜日は、ブリジット先生が母国オーストラリアへの旅行から戻ってきました。みんな、先生の話や体験を聞いて、質問を沢山して興奮していました！金曜日は、島内キャンパスで不審者訓練をしました。不審者が校舎に入ってきたことを想定して、適切な手順で避難する訓練をしました。訓練が終わった後、生徒たちは、先生たちから安全対策を聞いて、それぞれ面白い有用なアイディアや質問を共有し合いました。身の安全を守ることはとても大切ですね。💪
