This is one of the many questions ISN Elementary Class have been discussing this week within our new unit entitled “Occupations”. Our transdisciplinary theme is “Who we are”. Our central idea is “Occupations are interconnected and essential for the well-being of a community.”
One of our initial activities was to consider what would be the most important items you would take on a trip to a tropical island if everything you took could only weigh a total of 10kg. Students worked together to carefully classify their chosen items into either needs or wants, and then select only the most essential items from the needs list for the trip.
Students have also been viewing videos about the importance of the different jobs within a community. Next week we will investigate how and why many of these jobs are interconnected. In addition students have been deepening their understanding of “community”; during class time we have been looking at how everyone in our class is an important part of our “classroom community”: doing jobs, sharing ideas, and helping to solve problems.
ISN Elementary Class would like to thank Ryu, Taro and Yuumi for welcoming the new students to our school at our Welcome Ceremony on Monday. The three of you spoke clearly, confidently, and with lots of volume in your voices. We were all very impressed. Thank you and well done!
Most importantly this week we want to acknowledge our 2 ISN bus drivers, Mr Hojo, and Mr Aoshima who work very hard every day taking care of our bus and driving us around Matsumoto. ISN Elementary Class wanted to show their appreciation so we took some photos and all the students enjoyed writing to say their special thank you. We could not learn without their help. Certainly they are an important part of our ISN community.
