This week we calculated the answers to number stories, we divided up a huge watermelon and then ate it, and we painted patterns without a paintbrush. In mathematics we continue to count PET bottle lids; we are now up to 5,531. Thank you to all the people who have sent in lots already; please keep sending them in. Furthermore, using our calculators and pictures of different real-life situations, we have been deciding which of the 4 operations we would use to solve various problems. Then on Tuesday when we cut up the watermelon, we found the use of fractions very helpful. However, we found it very difficult to cut all the pieces the same size.
In the process of rearranging our seating, we decided it would be very useful to draw an aerial map of our classroom. Each student climbed up a ladder and looked at the classroom from a slightly higher perspective. It was certainly a thoughtful exercise which finally involved labeling each part of the map with the corresponding items in the classroom, and putting everyone’s name on the tables where they will be sitting for the next couple of months.
During the last 2 months of our IB unit “Earth’s natural cycles affect what living things do.” we have enjoyed investigating many different questions about seasons, weather, the Earth’s orbit, and the Earth’s rotation which gives us day and night. This week students wanted to look at the places on Earth that have only 2 seasons unlike Japan and many other places which have 4 seasons. We watched documentaries on life in Svalbard, Indonesia, and Kenya in Africa. Students were quickly able to identify some of the things animals and people do differently because of these cycles. We ended up with more questions so hopefully students will have the opportunity to find more answers.
今週のElementary Classでは面白い学びと発見がありました！
ペットボトルのキャップは現在5531個もたまり、1万個まで後半分以下となりました！皆さんのご協力のおかげで、大きな数まで数えることができ、様々な学びと創造に生かされています。ありがとうございます。様々な問題を解く時に、どんな計算方法を使うとより正確に答えを出せるかということを学んでいます。火曜日にはスイカをECの人数分に切るためには、分数の原理を利用すると一人ひとりに均等に切り分けれるという発見がありました。もちろん、まったく同じサイズに切ることは難しいですが・・・。ECではいつも学びの元となる発見があり、とても楽しいです。
自分たちの座る場所と位置を改めて考え、決める時間もありました。教室の図を描き、はしごを登って高いところから教室を見てみるといつもとは違った景色と考えが浮かびます。家具など見たものと地図に表すものを一致させ、席替えをして心機一転、この席順で数ヶ月間を過ごしていきます。
“Earth’s natural cycle affect what living things do.”というIBテーマで2ヶ月間学んできました。子どもたちからは季節や天気、地球の仕組みについてたくさんの疑問が出てきています。日本では４つの季節がありますが、世界の他の国々では２つしか季節がない地域もあります。授業ではスバールバル諸島、インドネシア、そしてケニヤの生活についてのドキュメンタリーを観ました。環境の違う場所で人々や動物が生活する様子や習慣の違いに、子どもたちはすばやく目をつけ、最終的にはさらにたくさんの疑問が出てきました。来週はそれらの答えを考え、さらなる発展へ繋がる学びになることでしょう。
