Penguins and dogs?

This week ISN Elementary Class had the pleasure of investigating how the people in the small town of Warrnambool in Victoria, Australia have helped to save a colony of fairy penguins living on an island near their town. These tiny penguins were being eaten by foxes.
Our transdisciplinary theme is “Who we are” and our central idea is “Nations of the world share a common desire to make our planet Earth a better place.”
The people in the Warrnambool community chose a very unusual idea. A local Warrnambool chicken farmer had used maremma dogs from Italy to guard his chickens so they decided to train his dogs to protect the island from foxes during the penguin’s breeding and nesting season.
After doing their research, students wrote the ideas they thought were interesting and important. We look forward to using some of their articles in our newspaper which we will publish at the end of this unit of study.
This week we also had the opportunity to help a young bird which was unable to fly due to some rubbish stuck to its wing. After cutting off the sticky substance we released the bird into the forest near our school. When we let it go, it flew very well right up into the tree. It was great to be able to make the world a better place by helping this tiny bird.
