Consider the rice ball: An equilateral triangle (despite its namesake) of moist rice, with succulent centers of various fillings, and an outer blanket of crisp seaweed perfectly wrapped in plastic. But how, pray tell, does a store-bought rice ball get to you–the consumer? Well, that’s what the 1st grade students set out to discover!
Delving further into our inquiries and unit about jobs, we began by examining a rice ball and taking it apart to investigate all of the ingredients that go into it, along with the jobs responsible for those ingredients. This activity coincided with what we have been studying for the past week–how people in a community are connected by their jobs. The students identified (for the rice balls we looked at) the following jobs: Rice farmers, seaweed farmers, plastics makers, and salmon farmers (the filling ingredient in our rice balls). We learned about what each job is responsible for, and viewed some videos that shed light on exactly what they do.
After identifying the jobs, the students set out creating a diagram of posters illustrating each job, and the ultimate destination all of their hard work arrives at. We discovered that there are a lot of jobs and a lot of steps involved in getting a rice ball to the store. The 1st graders found it interesting to examine where our food comes from, and the people responsible for getting it to us.
We found this cast of characters–or shall I say jobs–worthy of a round of applause!
今週は、市販おにぎりが消費者の手に渡るまでを調査し、ラップに包まれたパリパリの海苔、三角形のほかほかごはんと食欲をそそる色々な具のおにぎりを考察しました。
探求のテーマ『仕事』をさらに突き進め、おにぎりを分解して材料と材料を作る人の役割を観察しました。先週学んだ、社会の人々の仕事がどのように繋がっているのかの続きとして、おにぎり調査を行いました。
子供たちは、おにぎりを見て、米農家、海藻農業、プラスチック製造業、鮭漁業など色々な職業の方が関わっていることを発見していました。そして、それぞれの仕事の責任を学び、実際どのような仕事を行っているのかビデオを見ました。

自分たちの日々の食事について、どこから食料が来てどんな職業の人が携わっているかを調べるのに、みんな非常に関心を持っている様子でした。世の中には多種多様な仕事があり、おにぎりが販売されるまでに、様々な人々が関わっていることを知ることができました。日々頑張っている様々な職業の方に拍手しましょう！
