Well rested and ready for action. Grade 4 has returned to the classroom this week with lots to occupy our time.
ゴールデンウィーク中しっかり休んで準備万端。4年生は今週から教室に戻り、たくさんの時間を過ごしています。
I shall begin by saying thank you for being unwitting participants in a social experiment during the Golden Week holiday. If your child did something strange or out of the ordinary i.e. feet on the table at dinner time, then may I extend our thanks for having been part of a class experiment in considering reactions of people when we break social norms. Apologies if said child also went to bed early with no supper!
まず、ゴールデンウィークには、知らず知らずのうちに社会実験に参加していただいたことに感謝しています。もし、お子さんが夕食時にテーブルの上に足を置くなど、普段とは違うことをしたのであれば、社会の常識を破ったときの人の反応を考える授業の実験をしたということになります。クラス実験に参加してくれたことに感謝します。もし、そのお子さんが夕飯を食べずに早く寝てしまったとしたら、申し訳ありません！
Continuing with our unit theme of “social groups” we began the week by revising some of the key terms we had previously considered; social groups, reference groups, in/out groups and social norms.
この週は、「社会集団」というテーマに沿って、（民族などの）社会集団、（家族・地域・学校などの）準拠集団、（同じものが好きな少人数派の）内集団（内集団に属さない）外集団、社会的規範など、これまで考えてきた重要な用語を再確認することから始めました。
We also played a game “Two truths and a lie” which proved very popular with everyone. In this game, each player gives three statements about themselves, one of which is a lie. The other players then have two minutes to ask questions and determine which of the statements is untrue. The students seemed to really enjoy this exercise in both cunning and sleuthing.また、「2つの真実と1つの嘘」というゲームはクラスで大変好評でした。このゲームでは、各プレイヤーが自分自身について3つの発言をし、そのうち1つは嘘をつきます。他のプレイヤーは2分間で質問をして、どの発言が嘘かを判断します。生徒たちは、この狡猾さと推理力の訓練をとても楽しんでいるようでした。
We have also been working on posters and presentations about individuals considered “unique”. We asked what made these people “individuals” and someone who broke either social norms or was apart from their reference group and/or usually both. The five individuals we considered were, Emily Pankhurst, Muhammad Ali, Buckminster Fuller, Frida Kahlo and David Bowie.
また、「ユニーク」と思われる個人についてのポスターやプレゼンテーションにも取り組みました。エミリー・パンクハースト、モハメド・アリ、バックミンスター・フラー、フリーダ・カーロ、デビッド・ボウイの5人について私たちは、彼らを「個性的」にしているものは何か、社会的規範を破った人、基準となるグループから外れた人、たいていはその両方であることを問いかけました。
