From the end of October the students have been learning phonics focusing on consonants and short vowels.
In result of their hard work, they started to read simple words by themselves now!!
This week in Shooting Star we have started to learn about long vowels and their sounds; A, E, I, O, U.
As for long vowels, it takes some time for the students to get used to the sound because for a long time they have accustomed to sound vowels in short form.
Meanwhile they are learning to accustom themselves with long vowels through various introduction activities;
-manipulating sounds
add long vowel letter A in front of CORN, which makes a word “ACORN”
add long vowel letter E after S sounds, which makes “SEE” or “SEA”
-find a letter(picture card) that they hear in a word
listen to the word “HUGE” and find the medial sound letter, which is U as a long vowel sound
For mathematics, we are now learning about ones, tens, one-hundreds.
How do we add 2 digits of numbers? Do we start adding from ones or tens?
The students are very happy to complete the tasks by themselves and sometimes help each other in any occasion.
We also enjoy playing in the park.
The snow has melted and we can’t play in the snow for now. Let’s hope it will snow again soon so that we’ll have fun making snowmen, sledding, and playing snowball fight!

10月から学んできたフォニックス。
先週、子音(consonants)と短母音(short vowels)全てを学び終えました。毎週2つずつアルファベットを学び、たくさんの単語やそれらを読むときのルールを確認し、ワークシートに取り組んできました。
みんな本当によく頑張り、今ではシンプルな単語は一人で読めるくらいにもなりました！
今週からは長母音にフォーカスしています。
今まで短母音を学んできたため、頭のスイッチを切り替えるのに苦労していますが、様々な導入時の活動で長母音のルールや、発音、単語に触れています。
例えば、A（長母音エイ）をCORNという単語の前に付けると、ACORN（エイコーン）。
Sという音の後にE（長母音のイー）を付けると、SEE（スィー）またはSEA（スィー）。
他には、Ms Bonが言う単語を良く聞いて、最初・中間・最後の音をなすアルファベットをカードから探し出します。
算数では、1の位、10の位、100の位を学んでいて、10の位の足し算にもチャレンジしています！
10の位の足し算はどういうひっ算の方法でするの？1の位から、それとも10の位から足すのかな？
自力で問題を解けたときの喜んだ顔は最高です！お友達を手伝ってあげること、協力することも喜んでしています。
たくさん学び、思いっきり遊び。
雪が解けてしまった南部公園では、ターザンロープに乗ったり、氷鬼ごっこをしたり、それぞれ思う存分楽しんでいます。
またすぐに雪が降って、雪だるまを作ったり、そり遊びをしたり、雪合戦をしたりできる日が待ち遠しいですね。

２月３日（金）には節分ということで、教室にも鬼がきました！！
さすがシューティングスター！泣くことも怖がることもなく、懸命にボールを投げつけて”Go away monsters!”と言っていました。
