We started UOI this week by introducing Line of Inquiry 2 — how industries changed our lives. In LOI2, we will compare life in the past without machines and life today with all the technologically advanced machines. In order to do this, we will learn what appliances or technologies looked like the in past versus today and how these developments changed our lives significantly.
今週のUOIは、LOI2「産業は私たちの生活をどのように変えたか」の紹介から始まりました。LOI2では、機械のない昔の生活と、技術的に進歩した機械のある現在の生活を比較します。そのためには、昔はどのような電化製品や技術があったのか、そしてそれらの発展がどのように私たちの生活を大きく変えたのかを学びます。
We watched a short video called “Technology Evolution Timeline” where they saw different types of old and modern technologies. The students found the video very interesting! They were amazed at how some things looked like in the past (like a toilet made out of wood!).
❛技術進化のタイムライン’という短いビデオを見て、さまざまなタイプの古い技術と現代の技術を学びました。生徒たちはこのビデオをとても興味深く見ていました。木でできたトイレなど、昔の様子を見て驚いていました。
As an activity, I printed some photos of old and modern technologies and appliances, divided the class into teams and asked each team to categorize the photos by arranging from oldest to newest. Some photos include technology inventions for communication, music and transportation. They all did very well!
アクティビティとして、昔と今の技術や電化製品の写真を印刷したものを、チームに分かれて古いものから新しいものへと並べて分類しました。写真の中には、通信、音楽、交通などの技術的な発明も含まれています。みんな上手にできましたね！
Another activity I asked them to do is to interview their grandparents on what technology looked like in their time. Half of the class will do it over the phone, another half will write a letter and wait for the response. The purpose of this activity is to differentiate the methods and results and reflect on how these advancements can make our lives more convenient. The students will present the interview results to class as soon as they receive all the responses.
もうひとつのアクティビティは、各自、祖父母にインタビューをして、彼らの時代のテクノロジーがどのようなものだったかを聞いてもらいました。クラスの半分の生徒達は電話で行い、もう半分の生徒達は手紙を書いて返事を待っています。この活動の目的は、方法と結果を区別し、これらの進歩がいかに私たちの生活を便利にするかを考えることです。生徒達は、すべての回答を受け取り次第、インタビュー結果をクラスで発表する予定です。ご協力いただきましたご家族の皆様、ありがとうございました。
This unit about Industries has been going pretty well so far! I’m glad the students are enjoying the activities and learning at the same time. We’re all looking forward to learning more about this topic.
