The Great Explorers of the Upper Elementary Class

The Upper Elementary Class students are deep into their exploration of their second unit of inquiry, discussing the ideas of migration and what triggers migration on a daily basis. The students have looked into the ideas that the reasons for migration could be for survival, entertainment and inquiry. They watched several videos on the refugee situation in Syria and the children affected by it, as well as some about the explorations of Antarctica. Everyone was intrigued by seeing how fearless explorers spend their days on the South pole and had great ideas to share with their partners. They also read a book on some great explorers such as Marco Polo and James Cook.
Maybe some of ISN students will become great explorers as well? 🚢
Upon discussion, students were excited to start writing essays on the topic. The essays will be the first things they prepare for the second issue of their newspaper, ISpotNews. The first issue was a big hit this week and students worked very hard using paper and tape to prepare a large number of copies and think of the places they could send them to and people they can show them to. Most wanted to share their hard work with their proud parents and grandparents, but copies were also shown to other schools, shops and newspaper companies in the area. Everyone showed great co-operation and thinking skills and they can feel very proud of themselves.
The students have started to read poetry as well, learning that written word can also explain abstract feelings and use metaphors. They read poems about the feeling of happiness children can feel and compared it to the lives of refugee children seen in the videos. How lucky are we to lead such carefree lives?
The class is not forgetting their promise to continuously try making the World a better place either. They worked hard on cleaning up the overgrown foliage on the riverside pathway next to the school that they use as an exercise track. This way they helped themselves and made their run a much nicer and cooler activity, but also helped the community in making it a nicer place for everyone who would like to escape from the heat of the upcoming months and enjoy a nice walk. 👩‍🌾
On Thursday, a sixth-grader came to visit the class for a day. The students tried their best to make him feel welcome and show him around the school. We hope he and his mum had as wonderful a day as the rest of the class did.
Have a great, fun weekend, everyone! ☀️
