The Upper Elementary class students are still keeping themselves busy with exploring their Unit of Inquiry. This week, they have continued reading various books and watching videos, inquiring into such topics as the Haiti Earthquake of 2010, the discoveries of new civilizations by the Great Explorers of the past, such as Marco Polo, and the lives of people as far back as the copper age.
Some of the students have already started thinking of ideas and preparing for the first part of Unit’s final assessment – designing their own board or card game. They will research into what makes a good board game, have a meeting with a board game designer and use craft materials to make their design come to life! And of course, the most important thing – getting to play their own board game. 🎲
The second part of the assessment will be an interview every student will have with a person from their own family or school who has had the experience of migrating to another country. We’d like to ask for your assistance on this kindly.
On Friday, the students continues to make their environment a better place by putting the soil in the containers, fertilizing the ground and planting mini tomatoes and flowers in the campus’ front yard. Everyone had a lot of fun and we are all anxiously waiting for our little plants to pop up! 🍅
A new introduction to the class’ daily schedule is the daily playtime, which will take place everyday for 45 minutes after lunch. The students were very excited at the though of playing their favourite team games in the school’s front yard and their teachers believe this will keep them energized and their minds fresh for the English, Japanese and Math tasks that await them in the afternoon. 📐
We would like to thank all the parents and grandparents who came to visit the class on Tuesday’s Open School Day. We hope it offered you a further insight into what everyday life is like in the Upper Elementary Class.
We also said goodbye to our new friend Mona on Thursday, which was her last day at the school. The students and the teachers made Mona a very special scrapbook filled with their craft, drawings, messages and photos to keep as a memory. She seemed to like it very much. Everyone will miss her happy, carefree nature and learning more about her home country of Germany. We will come and visit!

アッパーエレメンタリークラスでは、新しいユニットの探求に励んでいます。今週は、2010年に起きたハイチ地震、マルコポーロのような偉大な探検家による新しい国の発見、銅器時代の人々の生活などに関して、様々な本を読んだり、ビデオを見たりして探求しました。
ユニットの最終評価の一部である、ボード作成とカードゲームについても考え準備し始めた子もいます。どうやって良いボードゲームを作成するか調べ、フリーランスのボードゲームデザイナーとミーティングを行い、実際にクラフト作成を行います。もちろん、自分たちで作ったボードゲームで遊びますよ！
評価の一環として、インタビューも行います。家族や学校にいる人で実際に外国へ移住した経験のある人にインタビューをしますので、ご協力をお願いします。
新しい日課として、ランチ後に45分プレイタイムを設けました。子どもたちは、庭で大好きなチームゲームを行ったりして、とても楽しんでいました。プレイタイムでリフレッシュすることで、午後の英語、日本語、算数の授業により意欲的に取り組めると思います。
火曜は、お忙しいところ、オープンスクールデーにお越し頂きありがとうございました。アッパーエレメンタリークラスの毎日の様子をより深く知っていただく良い機会になったと思います。
木曜日は、ドイツからのお友達モナとサヨナラしました。子どもたちと先生で、メッセージや絵をかいたり、写真を貼ったりして、彼女に渡す思い出アルバムを作りました。モナにとても気に入ってもらえました。みんな、彼女の笑顔とゆったりとした性格や、ドイツの話をしてくれたことを、忘れないでしょう！いつか、モナに会いにドイツに行きたいですね！
金曜日は、キャンパス前で、プランターに土と栄養を入れ、ミニトマトと花を植えました。みんな、芽が出るのを心待ちにして、畑づくりを楽しんでいます。
