What exciting weather we’ve had this week! The students enjoyed the cooler weather Tuesday’s typhoon brought, which was perfect to play in, but we have also had a few unfortunate things happen to us, like our cucumbers being blown away by the wind! Not to worry though, everyone agreed that we will make a new structure for the cucumbers where they can grow big and yummy again! We hope everyone stayed safe during the typhoon! 🥒
The Upper Elementary Class has also welcomed a new student this week. His name is Kenta, he came from the Tokyo area and has joined Grade 4. Everyone welcomed him enthusiastically, happy to have one more new friend. ☀️
The central idea for this Unit of Inquiry is “Inventions can influence a person’s everyday life, a society and the Earth’a environment. In terms of researching it, the students have watched various videos on world famous inventors and inventions and have tried their hand at thinking about which have been the most significant or have influenced the society the most. Everyone seems to be a big fan of Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla. 💡
They have also read plenty of books on the topic, searching for important key words they can use as part of their spelling practice and they practiced their writing through the teacher’s dictation. On Wednesday, they had a chance to explore the life of an inventor themselves when they tried to make a simple telephone out of two paper cups, a piece of string and some tape. Various experiments took place, such as figuring out whether thin or thick string works better, or do the telephones work the same when the string is straight and when it’s tangled. ☎️

台風が過ぎ去り、だんだん涼しくなりましたね。生徒たちは、過ごしやすい天気の中、外遊びも楽しむことができました。残念ながら、庭で育てているキュウリが風で飛ばされてしまいました。でもご心配なく！皆で、どうしたら大きい美味しいキュウリをまた育てられるか、新しい構造で育てる方法を考えました。皆さん、台風の影響がなかったことをお祈りします！ 🥒
アッパーエレメンタリークラスでは、今月からグレード４（4年生）のクラスメートが仲間入りしました。彼の名前はKくんです。みんなで、彼を熱狂的に歓迎しました。新しいクラスメートが増えてとれも嬉しいです！☀️
今学んでいるUOI（探究の概念）は、『発明は人々の生活、社会、地球環境に影響を与えることが出来る。』です。このことを調べるために、みんなで、いくつかの世界で有名な発明家達や発明のビデオを見ました。そして、どの発明が一番重要で社会に多大な影響を与えたかを考えてみました。トーマスエジソンと二コラ・テスラが人気でした。
また、発明に関する本をたくさん読んだり、スペルの練習として使える重要な発明に関するキーワードを検索しました。また、先生による口述を書き取るディクテーションの練習もしました。 水曜日は、実際に発明家の気分を味わいました！２つの紙コップ、糸、テープで糸電話を作り、細い糸や太い糸どちらが良いか調べたり、真っすぐの糸と絡み合った糸ではどちらが聞こえやすいかなど色々試してみました。 ☎️
