Sorting, designing, making

Using our deeper understanding of the central idea “Money has an important role in human society”, we have been not only looking at the different ways people spend and lose money but also at the different ways people earn money.
One of the culminating activities this week was enacting three very different yet related jobs: rubbish collecting and sorting, designing, and making things. Today we looked at some of the photos of our students doing these jobs with some excellent results.
During this unit students had made lists of the ways people earn, use and lose money, and this week they divided these into 2 lists: ways people can receive money and the ways people can use or lose money. Then students used this information to design 3 money board games. They had to make sure that the players would have equal chances to earn and receive money as well as use and lose money. It was a challenge all students enjoyed. The final test was to play the games; and with the use of calculators students were easily able to check the ongoing balance of their money. It was a most enjoyable culminating activity.
