First grade began the week with a lot of firsts: a new teacher, a new classroom, new kinds of chairs and tables, and new ways of doing things.
For starters, the students wanted to make their own unique addition to the class. They decided to create their own “privacy partition” from some cardboard, where they can have their own special space separated from the rest of the classroom to play games in or to read. Everyone made rough draft designs of what they wanted to paint, and then they went to work; we took a vote on what the base color of the partition should be, and the result was . . . black. We all feverishly painted and had a lot of fun in the process. It’s a work in progress, and we will continue our artistic endeavors.
The first graders soon discovered exactly how messy painting can be, but some students expressed interest in becoming painters when they grow up (and of course, Yayoi Kusama came up in our discussion). This line of thought led us to our first Unit of Inquiry: Jobs. Since being a painter can potentially be a dirty job, we watched clips from the T.V. show “Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe” from the Discovery Channel. We saw a scientist that studies bats and bat guano, a skyscraper window washer, an oyster shucker, and a hoof trimmer. Indeed, they were dirty jobs!
What a week! The students eagerly await to learn more about the jobs people do every day, and to more firsts in 1st grade.
グレード１(一年生）は、新しい先生、クラスルーム、テーブル・椅子ややり方などたくさんの初めてなこと盛りだくさんで第一週が始まりました。
手始めに、児童たちはクラスに独自性を加えたいと思い、教室の空いている場所を、ゲームや読書ができる独自の空間にするために、ダンボールを使って『プライバシーパーティション』を作ることにしました。どのようにペイントしたいかデザインの草案をみんなで考え、パーティションの基色を何色にするか投票で決めました。投票結果は、黒です。 皆、興奮しながら絵具を塗り楽しみました！これからも芸術的な作業を行っていきます。
ペインティングは汚れる作業だと分かりましたが、大人になったら画家になりたいと関心を持った子もいます！（もちろん、スプリングプログラムで訪れた松本市美術館の展示、草間弥生の話も出てきました。）そして、私たちが学ぶ最初のレッスン（Unit of Inquiry)『Jobs（仕事）』の話題になりました。画家は汚れる仕事かもしれません。ですので、ディスカバリーチャンネルの“Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe” というテレビ番組のクリップ（カットされた場面）を見ました。 こうもりやこうもりの糞を研究する科学者、高層ビルの窓清掃員、カキの殻開け職人、削蹄師などを見ました。皆、仕事について学ぶことや初めて経験することを心待ちにしている様子です！
