Toppings N’ Droppings: A Two-Part Story

Aaaand . . . we’re back! 1st grade got up to some . . . interesting . . . things over the past couple of weeks.  We’ve been studying jobs and the responsibility people have to perform those jobs.  To do that, the 1st graders worked with pizza . . . and poo.  Sound like a terrible combination?  Well, it’s not as bad as you think . . . really!
For our Line of Inquiry 2 (“A job is something people have a responsibility to do”), the 1st graders had been learning about assembly lines, and how every person along an assembly line has a responsibility to perform a certain task to complete the job at hand.  For this, we decided to do our own assembly line by making pizzas.  To start with, the students created 11 different toppings to put on our pizzas, ranging from old time favorites like ham and sausage toppings, to the more surreal–such as snake and shark toppings.
After crafting the toppings, we formed our assembly line, and two students performed the unique job of the “conveyor belt” by passing the pizzas along down the line, whilst everyone else had the job of placing one of the 11 different toppings on the pizza dough as it traveled by.  When the pizzas reached the end of the line, they went into the “oven” (a laminator) and came out as a finished product.  Every student showed great responsibility by performing their special jobs exceptionally well–all the pizzas turned out wonderfully!
For the second part of our line of inquiry, the 1st graders went on an excursion to Alps Park to pay a visit to the zookeepers there and to learn about the responsibilities they have in taking care of the animals that reside in the park. The zookeepers discussed their various tasks and responsibilities, and then had the 1st graders try their hand at them–by brushing the animals’ hair and removing scores and scores of their droppings (some quite fresh).  They learned that sanitation is an important job that zookeepers have a responsibility to do, in order for the public to enjoy the animals living there.  Every student did a superb job at grooming and cleaning, even though the miasma was rather strong.
And there you have it–pizza and poo, with “responsibility” connecting the two.  We all had a lot of fun, and are continuing to learn about jobs.
Line of Inquiry2(探求の概念) “A job is something people have a responsibility to do”)では、どのように人々が製造ラインにてタスクをこなし仕事を完了させるかについて学びました。
