Milky Way 04 October 2018

This week Milky Way class has continued enquiries in the transdisciplinary theme how we organise ourselves, with the central idea being that people share responsibility in order to achieve a common purpose. The current line of enquiry is: we all have responsibilities.
In this vein and supplementary to last week’s library visit, Milky Way students together with Rainforest have cooperatively reorganised sections of the school library by colour-coding topics and further organising by author.

In English, the class is doing well in their new list of Dolch sight-words (52 words), additional to recognition of a substantial list of occupational titles with each being associated with a simple definition. They have also been writing relevant and different short paragraphs each day with the objective (additional to handwriting practice) being exposure to various phonograms in context and new grammar points including experience with punctuation.   Consequently, the class ‘coincidental vocabulary’ list is being slowly expanded.
Targeting the class’s new levelled reading program (Reading A – Z), students have been taking home individual-level (teacher assigned) readers additional to the student-selected library books. Assessment by ‘running record’ has been conducted with most students advancing by a level and a few students by two levels.

In mathematics the class has begun to employ their use of rulers with the theoretical as well as practical introduction of measurement in millimetres, centimetres and metres.

The class is becoming more enthused and accustomed to their daily morning exercise program and today, in lieu of a trip to the park the class enjoyed an extensive period of free time during which most students thoroughly enjoyed playing ‘musical chairs’.
